Artist Patrick Ryder Feeding Wild Swans

I am a self-taught artist currently living and working in Welburn, a beautiful village in the Howardian Hills, just outside York. My work is currently available in several venues in York and the surrounding area, and now on the internet.

I began drawing literally as soon as I was able to pick up a pencil. I have clear memories of sitting on my dad's knee at the age of three or four, drawing fish, birds and other animals. I got straight A's in art at High School, but - because of circumstances too complicated and boring to go into here - I was unable to pursue my interest in art to a higher level at the time.

I studied for a BEng in Computer Science at the University of York, and obtained the Spectra Tek award for my work on machine learning. After leaving university, I spent eight years working in the video games industry for Revolution Software, working on projects such as the famous Broken Sword series of adventure games.

Although I do love computer art, I still prefer traditional media. I simply can’t resist a pencil and a blank sheet of paper.

I find inspiration almost anywhere in this unbelievable universe we all share, but I am particularly drawn to the natural world. I find nature to be an inexhaustible supply of intriguing shapes and colours and textures; but more than this, it is a drama, fuelled by that most desperate of needs - to stay alive.
